## A Highland gundog with a coat of gold

The Golden retriever was bred in the Scottish Highlands. From about 1840 to 1890, Dudley Marjoribanks, the first Lord Tweedmouth, kept careful records of the breeding at his Guisachan estate in Inverness-shire, where he wanted a gundog for the rain and the rough ground. He crossed his yellow retriever with the Tweed water spaniel, a breed now extinct, and later added Irish setter and bloodhound. The estate's record books came to public notice in Country Life in 1952.

Goldens were first shown in England at the Crystal Palace show in 1908, listed as Flat Coats (Golden), and the AKC registered its first one in November 1925. The breed was popular in America from the start, and its popularity took off in the 1970s, the years of President Gerald Ford and his Golden, Liberty. It has been third in AKC registrations every year since 2021.

The standard asks for a rich, lustrous golden of various shades, with lighter feathering, on a dense, water-repellent coat that may be straight or wavy, with a natural ruff and heavier feathering on the neck, the thighs and the tail. It asks for friendly, intelligent eyes, preferably dark brown, a kindly expression, and a dog that is friendly, reliable and trustworthy.

## The Celebrity style on a Golden

The Celebrity is one of the shop's own house styles, and it is not an oil painting: it is made to look like the glossy studio photograph on the cover of a high-fashion magazine. Your dog sits as the cover model, head and chest, turned three-quarters with the chin a little raised, against a seamless backdrop in one soft color, with the masthead in large serif capitals across the top.

A Golden suits the part. One large, soft light makes the coat gleam, and the ruff and the feathering on the chest read as groomed for the shoot. A string of pearls at the neck is the one piece of couture, and the face and both ears stay clear.

The color is your dog's own. A deep red-gold, a medium gold or a senior with a whitened face keeps its shade and its markings from your photo; only the pose, the light and the cover come from the style.

## A gift for a Golden's people

Goldens are the dogs strangers stop to greet on the street, and their owners are used to standing to one side. The cover is a joke the whole family is in on, and a piece for a hallway, a home office or a teenager's room.

It suits a birthday, a young dog grown into its coat, or a gray-faced old Golden that has earned the spotlight. An old photo works too.

## Questions

### Will the cover look like my Golden retriever?

Yes. The cover is made from your photo, so the face, the eyes, the shade of gold and any white on the muzzle are your dog's. You see it before you pay, and you can try another photo or style first.

### Does it work for light and red Goldens?

Yes. The coat color comes from your photo, so a light gold, a deep red-gold and every shade between keep their own color under the studio light.

### Can the cover carry my dog's name or a headline?

No. The masthead is the only lettering on the cover: no headlines, no names and no date. For a portrait with your dog's name on it, choose a style that carries one.

### What photo of a Golden works best?

Daylight, the face in focus, and the whole head in the frame, both ears included. The cover shows the head and the chest, so a photo with the ruff in it helps. Phone photos are fine. Avoid filters, costumes and heavy shadows.

### Can two Goldens share one cover?

Yes. Use one photo with both dogs in it, and pick a larger size so each face gets room.
